Group One, Day One

It is now late Sunday evening here at Headquarters, but I could not rest (what is that, btw?!?) until I provided you this report on the antics and fishing reports of Group One on their first day of fishing here in the marvels of western Montana.  First and foremost, weather-wise, this was the best fishing day in Group One's thirteen year history of fishing in these here parts—temps in the high 70's, little to no wind, cruising clouds providing cover when and where needed, and an all-in-all perfect fishing day!!

As seen above, the big bounty of the day was boasted by Josh "Commie Pinko" Genser and his 24" caught and released Blackfoot bull trout, followed closely by Mark "Whitey" Handron's twenty inch Blackfoot river brown—both garnering them first ink on the Twenty Inch Club Board and, for the first time in his many years of fishing with us, bestowing on Josh the first Yellow Hat for the largest trout catch of the day—congrats both!!

The boats that fished the Blackfoot River (which in prior weeks had been fishing well with a huge number of reported bull trout catchings, turned out to be a tough choice for the day, with the Four Downers (Eddie and sons Michael, Douglas and Robert) talking more of ospreys, marmots (which "Not to Tarry Winfrey heard to mean "Mormons", much to the hilarity of Dem Ones!) and eagles and of muskrats and"the smallest fish my guide has ever seen hooked" as opposed to reaping the reward of huge fish that this river holds.  Eddie boasted a 17" rainbow among his handful of caught fish and that spoke loudest for The Uppers!  Much of the same was reported by the SS Reimann and McAdams (who, together, account for over 60 days of Extravaganza fishing!) of their Blackfoot day where a 15" brown topped the 20+ fish that this dynamic duo was able to fool.  Same story with the SS Shepard's who spent their day on the lower portion of this fabled "A River Runs Through It"river.

A notable exception to the ordinariness of the Blackfoot was the specialness of the Bitterroot, where our one boat of Nicholas Shepard and new bride of Jean "Yellowinski" Prominski Shepard who, per my earlier request to honor our now deceased Hostess With the Mostess with a (one per day) "Cast For Kathy", told of Yellowinski one dedicated cast yielding a beautiful trout and the very next casts by the blushing couples ending up with a double up!  Chiming in to their report was Mormon Tarry with his report that Kathy still must have her wicked sense of humor, as his dedicated cast in her honor ended up with a 5" squawfish on the end of his line—I've told you for years, "don't mess with that lady, 'y'all"!!

The Clark Fork River turned out to be the place to be this Sun Day, as the Rosenbaum three (along with now-Mormon Terry) had nice showings as did Demetry "The Ghost" Kondrasheff and Chris "Hook Em" Barger reported in with a 40+ fish day with nothing more than in the 18" range, however, as did your truly who had the great pleasure to fish with daughter Trina "Boots" Clausen and mascot Ma'am likewise with a 40+ fish day with my highlight being with and seeing my beautiful daughter land and release rainbow after rainbow after gorgeous rainbow trout all day long.  That even wore Ma'am out, and that is darn hard to do!!

So there you have it, folks, Day One of Group One is in the record books and the weather report for tomorrow's Day Two is as spectacular as was today's.

Best to all reporting from the scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron
