Group One, Day Two Report!

“Tsunami”

Yes, that is the word that immediately comes to mind when I think of Dem Ones and what a wave of activity they brought with them this year (again!). Highlighting the Ones’ Day Two was a triple of twenties (see separate posting), the first “non-report” in Extravaganza history, and another blessed Kathy sighting (this time picked up by “Not To Tarry” now Mormon Winfrey during the boat reports as she flew up the creek in the form of a majestic bald eagle on its evening run—bravo, pal, it is great to have you back here again!).

First, as to the “non-report,” it seems that Michael “Big Fish” Downer and his father and gaggle of brothers failed to either live up to his name or any other fish name on their Bitterroot Day Two, for he approached me (literally with an armful of primo Napa wine that he [with permission, I might add]) and asked if his two boats could not report on their (non)activities that day. Of course I said “yes,” but as those of you who know me well that only created a wonderful window of opportunity to do their report for them and to thereby overemphasize the very thing that they wished to hide, to wit less than a dozen fish between the four Downers (a real “downer,” I emphasized), noting that their non-report can be summarized in the apt legal/Latin phrase res ipsa loquitur which, translated appropriately, means “the thing speaks for itself,” as, indeed, it did—hence, perhaps the overly filled armful of wine of nee Big Fish!

Not the case with the others, however, as the boat reports (my favorite event of the Extravaganzas, btw) saw the awarding of two (count ‘em!) Yellow Hats, the first to Liam “Son of Whitey” Handron for his TWO twenty inch Bitterroot browns (see, Michael, there were Big Fish in the Root yesterday)—one a twenty incher and the other a twenty-three incher—and the second being an honorary Yellow Hat (for being our very first international fisherman!) to my new good friend from Patagonia, Chile, Eduardo “The Pisco Kid” Barrueto, shown above both singularly and in the duet of yellow shot with amigo Amarillo Liam—congrats both!!

The ying and the yang, the alpha and the omega were in great form on the Ones Day Two, with one extreme being the boat of Day One Yellow Hatter Josh “Commie Pinko” Genser and boat mate “Minnow Mel” McCormack who talked more of their deer and lunch encounters than their six Bitterroot fish landed, and the other extreme being the SS Rosenbaums (with Mormon Tarry Winfrey on board) who boasted “the best fishing days ever" for "Big Ben" and "Yellow Hat" Adam—the former for catching (and releasing) his first-ever fish from shore and the latter for stroking in sixteen (count ‘em, Downers!) fish on his own accord, the largest being a Root sixteen incher!! Also on the Root were husband wife combo Nicholas “The Czar” Shepard and his beautiful bride Jean “Yellowinski” Prominski Shepard, which found the bride in the bow with the bounty of the day and the question very much open who was fishing the bow on Day Three, the duo landing 20+ fish with the largest being Yellowinski’s 18” brown. Also Rootin’ on Day Two was that dynamic duo of Demetry “The Ghost” Kondrasheff and Chris “Hook Em” Barger who among their 45 fish landed and released was a beauty of a twenty-inch Bitterroot rainbow separately featured—congrats Chris!!

Yes, indeed, res ipsa loquitur!!

As on Day One, the Clark Fork of the Columbia River was fish friendly to Dem Ones, witness our Double Up Outfitter with Messrs. “SOS” John Reimann and “Crack” Scott McAdams aboard, who boated (again!) over 30 fish including two doubles, a 19 1/2 inch Reimann bow, a (rare to be seen) mule deer, osprey and eagles galore as well as the SS Brian “Moraine” Shepard who, with son Josef “Fear The Beard” landed “between 35 and 40” Clark Fork bows, the largest being an eighteen incher and the rarest sight of the day being a gaggle of five immature bald eagles holding court on a single bank…bravo, gang!!

So there you have it folks, Day Two of Group Ones is in the book and, as this is written, they fish Day Three and it will be interesting to see tonite what nature’s bounty has produced for this wonderful all-veteran group.

Best to all from the scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron
